dreaming in english is a poem that is part of a larger project about immigration, assimilation, and transgression.
Christina Gómez is a native of Chicago, Illinois. She is a writer and professor in the liberal arts department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She spends her time writing poetry, short stories, and eating empanadas.
“dreaming in english”
by Christina Gómez
she married a white man against her better judgment,
thinking it would be ok, believing it would work out.
she didn’t see the pitfalls along the way,
her hair would have to be straightened, her teeth brightened.
the posters of Che Guevara and Diego Rivera were window dressings,
pretending that it still mattered.
she would code-switch – Hola m’ija – what’s up!
but only at the appropriate moments.
she dreamed in english, only english.
never in Spanish.
her memories were buried in pictures
that she would pull out
from dusty photo albums
eyes that pulsated with rhythms that she no longer saw.
